Jerusalem -- The spectre of a Palestinian civil war loomed yesterday when the military wing of the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine threatened to kill Palestinian Authority security chiefs if its leader, Ahmed Saadat, and other PFLP political prisoners were not "immediately released" from authority jails.

Beirut -- Some Arabs did criticise the assassination of Israeli cabinet minister Rehavam Zeevi. But not because it was an act of terrorism. They simply shared the widespread apprehension about its impact on the hoped-for renewal of the peace process.

The roots of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which yesterday assassinated the Israeli cabinet minister Rehavam Zeevi, can be traced to 1948, the year the state of Israel was born.

George Habash, the PFLP founder, was a medical student at the time and witnessed the forced removal of Arabs from their towns. "From that time, I felt that I had to sacrifice all my life for my just cause," he said.

Jerusalem -- The assassins struck at breakfast time in Jerusalem's Hyatt hotel, a luxurious, honey-coloured complex whose rooms command majestic views of the holy city. The place was a natural choice for a retired army general who held rigid opinions about the ownership of the surrounding landscape.

The Israeli minister for tourism Rehavam Zeevi, who has been assassinated aged 75, was so rightwing that he barely remained within the outer perimeter of political acceptability. He advocated the "transfer by agreement" of 3.3m Palestinians from the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza to the 21 Arab nations of the region. This policy, he argued, would "cure a demographic ailment". Somewhat slyly, last February he reminded liberal detractors that it was the Labour party that had invented and carried out the first "transfer" of Arabs, in 1948.

PFLP: We will not surrender

We will not surrender; victory is coming
POPULAR FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE
PFLP Communique, 29 August 2001

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) issued the following statement on August 29, 2001, following the assassination of its secretary general, Comrade Abu Ali Mustafa, by Israeli forces.

YESTERDAY was a sad day in the history of the PFLP. It was also a sad day for the Palestinian people, the Arab world, and the world’s internationalists. Yesterday the Palestinian people marched in Ramallah for the last time with Abu Ali Mustafa. More than 50,000 mourners, women, men and children, joined the procession, making it one of the biggest funerals in Palestinian history. Indeed, many more would have come from all over Palestine, if not for the barbaric restrictions of movement imposed on our people by the Israeli occupation army. Thousands of people in all Palestinian cities, as well as thousands of others in Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon, paid tribute to Abu Ali Mustafa by organising symbolic funerals. Mourning ceremonies to receive condolences took place all over the world. Dr George Habash, Al-Hakim, addressed the Palestinian people and the Arab masses and offered condolences for the loss of his long-standing comrade and friend.

Two rockets fired from a helicopter yesterday morning blew apart the Palestinian leader, Abu Ali Mustafa, as he sat at his desk in Ramallah, just feet away from Yasser Arafat's own offices. At a stroke, Israel had eliminated one of its most dogged foes.
